I was very relieved this morning to receive a phone call from my Dermatologist to let me know that a biopsy she took from my ear on Tuesday was negative for any type of cancerous tissue. I noticed a scab on the outer edge of my ear about 8 weeks ago. I could not figure out what I had done to myself, figured our exuberant dog had scratched me somehow. But then, it didn’t heal.. Week after week, it would not heal. I knew I should get it checked, but I just kept forgetting, or putting it off, until my wife said, “you should probably get that looked at.” She was right, and clearly she’d noticed it and was wise enough (and loving enough) to be concerned. So, in I went to the dermatologist (who treid to tell me they could not fit me in for 6 weeks.) No go, my friends! I pushed to see someone - anyone! - in the practice ASAP, so I got in with the Nurse Practitioner.
Anyway, as I shared this news this morning with my sister, who happens to be an esthetician, she said the following “everyone should ask the person who cuts their hair to let them know if something “unusual” pops up behind the ears, a place you can’t see clearly for yourself…” She is so right! So, I’m going to start passing this piece of advice along whenever I have a venue: Don’t just wash behind your ears - get someone to look behind them for you!
